Origin

The Lily flower has a scientific name called Lilium. This flower originated in East Asia and is mostly cultivated well in China, Korea, and Japan. The flower spread and grew well in colder areas such as North America and Europe. Interestingly, this flower has a very long history that more than 3,000 years, and the flower has been included in different societies.

The flower belongs to the Liliaceae family, which is also the same family as tulips. After a thousand years of cultural and social development, people still adore the lily as before and include it in their lives.

Habitat and Climate

In terms of habitat, the lily flower is quite versatile as it can be cultivated well in certain regions. However, mimicking its original habitat is important to make sure the flower can thrive well. Lily generally grows with the right balance of cool nights and warm days.

In this case, China is one of the largest producers of lilies, especially in Heilongjiang and Shandong. It is because of the ample rainfall and well-drained soil that it ais perfect place to grow the flowers.

Meanwhile, in Japan, lilies have found a comfortable home for the flowers as many lily species grow well in this place. Japan is well-known for the Oriental hybrids. The area, such as Honshu has one of the best places to grow flowers.

Some areas outside East Asia, such as Oregon and Washington, have become a home for lilies too because of their friendly climates for the flowers, as well as the volcanic soil. Similarly to other areas such as Canada, the Netherlands, and France. Other places, such as New Zealand and South America around Ecuador, have also become one of the best places to find this flower due to its excellent habitat. Mostly, the lilies around this place are very vibrant and have long-lasting blooms.

In short, typically lilies can grow anywhere as long as it has a cool temperature. However, some lilies can also adapt to hot or humid weather. It always depends on the species.

Shape, Colors, and Fragrance

The characteristics of the flowers are very distinctive, which can grow between 60-120 cm in height. It has a trumpet-shaped bloom with 6 overlapping petals. Meanwhile, the lily flower has prominent yellow staments with a distinctive fragrance. Meanwhile, the lilies have green leaves arranged alternately on their stems.

Speaking about colors, the flower has incredible varieties from yellows, whites, oranges, deep reds, purples, and even sometimes it comes with bi-colored varieties.

Some people prefer the solid colors due to certain meanings, so it can be a perfect gift to express their feelings. Generally, the whites, reds, and yellows become the favorites.

Meaning

The lily flowers bring different meanings in different cultures. In many cultures, this flower is believed to be the symbol of purity and sacredness. For example, in Christianity, there are lilies called "Madonna Lily" that symbolize the Virgin Mary. This flower represents virtue and purity. Even this flower is also used in a painting that depicts the Annunciation of Jesus's birth.

Meanwhile, in Chinese culture, these flowers bring a meaning as good fortune and harmony, making this flower perfect for wedding ceremonies.

In Roman and Greek culture, the flowers symbolize fertility as it is believed that this flower was born from goddess Hera's milk, which is spoiled to the earth.

In Japanese culture itself, the flower represents purity and elegance. This flower even appears in poetry and paintings. One of my favorites is Japanese lilies with a soft pink color.

Choosing the right colors when you want to give someone a bouquet of lilies is very important. Even though this flower has different meanings in many cultures, some general rules that you can follow include:

  • White lilies - This is one of the most desired colors because of its meaning. The white lilies represent purity and sincerity. This is the reason why in many cultures this type of lilies are included in wedding ceremonies and other religious events.
  • Pink Lilies - This symbolizes a gentle love and admiration. If you want to express your feelings to someone, this color is the perfect one. For the deep-pink version, it represents deep love and well-wishes.
  • Yellow Lilies - This represents happiness, friendship, and cheerfulness. The bright color brings a cheerful atmosphere, making it a suitable gift for friends and families.
  • Orange Lilies - These lilies represent prosperity and enthusiasm. It is good for people who have just started a new beginning, as this flower brings positive energy.
  • Red Lilies - As usual, the red color represents passionate love and desire. This flower is perfect for the loved one.

How to Grow Lilies?

Even though most lilies prefer cooler temperatures, this flower still needs a lot of sun. Make sure you put the plant in an area with direct sunlight. Typically, when a lily is placed in a shady place, the stem will point to the sun. Sometimes it falls over.

To make the flower thrive, you need a well-drained site where too much water underneath will rot the flower. You also need to enrich the soil with compost, well-rotted manure, and leaf mold. It is also better to use neutral soil, even though some species will be tolerant of alkaline soils.

When you plant the flower during the fall, make sure it is done weeks before the first fall frost date. If it is spring, just plant as soon as the frost has passed. If you get the container-grown lily plants, you can plant it anytime during early summer.
